Biography

I was born and raised in beautiful Virginia and I am happy to serve state employees as a CommonHealth Coordinator. I completed my BS in Nutrition and Exercise at Virginia Tech, and my MS in Health Education at Old Dominion University. Some of experience includes developing and presenting wellness programs, directing a fitness facility, and providing nutrition counseling. I am an AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) nationally certified group exercise, and I teach aerobics, step, strength and resistance training, spinning/indoor cycling and water aerobics. I currently live in Norfolk with my husband, son, daughter and three cats. A special health topic of mine is nutrition and diabetes education.

Why did you choose health education as a career field?

Wellness, nutrition and exercise are my passion. I was active in sports and cheerleading throughout high school, and I begin instructing group exercise classes as a college student at Virginia Tech. Good health and disease prevention was an exciting field and an easy choice for me! I have learned valuable information for myself and my family. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and resources with others.

What do you love most about your job?

Researching new wellness topics to share with fellow state workers. There is always new information on health, and CommonHealth covers everything from eating healthy to going green! Helping Virginia employees make healthy behavior changes and maintain good ones to enhance their quality of life is very rewarding. I love hearing success stories!

Do you want to share with your agencies?

A special interest of mine is diabetes education, so here is an interesting fact! Based on a 2,200 calorie diet, the USDA recommends that we do not consume more than 12 added teaspoons of sugar per day. (By the way, one 12 ounce can of regular soda has 10 teaspoons of sugar.) Studies indicate that the average American eats more than 32 teaspoons of sugar a day! Wow! By making a few small changes in our diet, we could really reduce our consumption of sugar and empty calories.

I look forward to seeing Agency Coordinators and fellow workers at programs! Stay healthy and active!
