Biography

I grew up in northern New Jersey and couldn't wait to leave the rat race. I graduated from the University of Maine in 1981 and earned my Master's degree in Applied Physiology from University of Virginia in 1984. I have worked with the CommonHealth program since it's beginning in 1986 at the College of William and Mary. In addition to CommonHealth, I have been on the adjunct faculty at W&M, and have taught group exercise classes for many MANY years. I live in Williamsburg with my husband, our 3 children, our dog and cat. I have recently become a proud member of the Hokie Nation.

Why did you choose health education as a career field?

After floundering as a Forestry major in college (I was a city girl who had never seen poison ivy!), I decided to combine my love for exercise and sport with my desire for a career that made a difference. A wonderful professor at the University of Maine opened my eyes to wellness (it was 1979 and a totally new concept) and I was hooked. I've been happy with my decision ever since.

What do you love most about your job?

What I love most about my job is the opportunity to work with wonderful people everyday. I also love the variety my job provides. Finally, when all is said and done, I think that health education does make a real difference in many people's lives.
